OVERVIEW

BACKGROUND

The Darlington Nuclear Generating Station (DNGS) is located on the Darlington Nuclear site, in the Municipality of Clarington, Regional Municipality of Durham. It is owned and operated by Ontario Power Generation (OPG). The DNGS is a CANDU pressurized heavy water nuclear generating station. The four reactors that make up DNGS have a combined net power output of 3,512 MW. They were commissioned and placed into operation between 1990 and 1993 and the station has operated safely and continuously since then.

Refurbishment of CANDU reactors is an aspect of their design and accepted as a requirement at some point in their operational service life. Refurbishment would allow DNGS to continue to operate until approximately 2055.

OPG is proceeding with definition phase work, including environmental and safety approvals, engineering studies, infrastructure development, and integrated project planning for the refurbishment of the DNGS. If refurbishment is determined to be economically and environmentally sound, OPG would move forward into the development phase.
